| The first full day of festival activities
begins with the Children's and Seniors' Day. Through several months
of preparation, and coordination with the Memphis County School Board,
the day is devoted to the youth. Teachers begin decorating their
class rooms in early January and building curriculum, when applicable,
around the featured country. Contests are held to identify art designs,
projects, and performances for presentation at the festival.
The day starts with a parade consisting of bands from the Memphis Shelby
County School System, throughout the day, youth performers fill the stage
with poetry, song and dance. Arrangements are made with participating
schools to transport bus loads of students to the event. They tour
the festival activities and learn more about the culture, political and
economical details of the country being featured. This year's venue
will be entitled, "Discovering Sierra Leone. A timeline of the countries
major events will be presented through displays, live performances, video
recordings and audio tapes.
